WOMAN'S ABILITY.
Who would doubt the fact of woman's having made good? And who would question mans belief in her abilities? says a writer in an exchange. Not one of to-day's advertisers, at any rate. A lady assistant-secretary is required, " qualifications sound chemical training (inorganic, organic, and physical), and some acquaintance with bacteriology, French, German, shorthand, and typewriting " Personally the paragraph made me realise what a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since 1914. Early in that year I was collecting matter with respect to the openings for women scientists i.i the industries. The result was not very encouraging. One man, I remember, filled me with fury. ! He patted my arm before I could avoid it, i made remarks which he intended to be : complimentary on my personal appearance , and age, and hazarded the opinion I was ■ a "suffragette" to inquire about or sug- : gest so ridiculous a topic! I I have wondered how hie business got on during the war. Had he to descend to the engagement of " suffragettes?" j
