ANZAC ANNIVERSARY.

COMMEMORATION TO-DAY. PARADE OF RETURNED MEN. SERVICE IN THE DOMAIN. To-day marks the fourth commemoration of New Zealand's proudest and most i solemn anniversary of he war, AnzaV I Day. The thoughts of all will turn toI day to the greatest of all New Zealand [soldiers' great adventures, to the immortal landing on GaUipoli that marked tlcir entry into the full glory and tragedy of war. To homes throughout the land, the day I will be one of mourning, but it will also 1 be one of a nation's pride in the magnificent, achievements of her sons. In order that the great day may be fully and I fitly observed by all, citizens have been | invited to observe it as a public holiday. Government offices will observe a close i holiday in commemoration of St. George's I Day and Anzac Day. The various banking institution will not be closed to-day, , but will observe the usual hours of biui I ness, Some business firms are clomii-.; their premises from midday, and otheis ' are closing for a period in the afternoon in order to give their emplayees an opportunity of attending the citizens' memorial service in the Domain. Commemoration services will be held, and special addresses delivered by well-known speakers. The official commemoration service to I which the public is invited, will he held i in the Domain Cricket Ground at 3 p.m., if the day is fine, and if wet, in the Town Hall. The Mayor will preside, and addresses will be delivered by Dr. A. W. Averill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, the I Rev. J. W. Shaw, and Chaplain Garner. ■ Returned soldiers will attend this service; they will parade in Queen Street at two o'clock, and march via Queen Street and Symonda Street to the Domain. Notification to Public. The Mayor stated last evening that the function in the Domain was fixed at the special request of returned soldiers, and if the weather kept fine the service would be held there, in accordance with the announcement. If the weather should turn out wet, however, or was otherwise unsuitable, the function will be held in the Town Hall. If the service were to be held in the Domain, the Union Jack only would be flown over the Town Hall. If the service were to be held in the Town Hall, the Union Jack and the New Zea land and Australian flags would be flown. A citizens' solemn memorial service will be held at St. Matthews' Church, com- ■ mencing at 12.15, in which ministers of several denominations will take part. The I vicar, the Rev. W. E. Gillam, the Revs. I R. H. Knowles Kcmpton, E. Evans, F. Warner, H. E. Be'.lnouse, and Jasper I Calder, wi'l all take part, and the address ; will bo delivered by the Rev. J. W. j Shaw. The service will consist of special I hymns, prayers, and the anthems, " Crpss- | ing the Bar," and " Blest are the DeI parted." "The Last Post" wi'l be sounded by trumpeters after the benediction, and the recessional will be the " Funeral March." accompanied by muffled peal of bells. The King's Empire Veterans and Woraene' National Reserve will parade a*' the service. Seats will be reserved fir returned soldiers and relatives of the fallen.' Their Excellencies the Governor-General and the Countess of Liverpool will attend the memorial service at St. Matthew's . So many soldier* have now returned, that it has been considered impracticable to continue the evening functions for reI turned men held on past anniversaries. | Two Church services will be held, a j special united service in the Pitt Street' , Methodist Church at 7.20 p.m., and a i service in the Holy Trinity Church, '■ Devonport at the same hour. The Rev. IH. Knowles Kempton will conduct the Pitt Street service, and the speakers will be the Rev. Angus MucDonald, chaplain to the forces, and the Rev. F. Warner. Five denominations will be represented at the Dev.nport service, in which archdeacon Hawkins, the Revs. G. Uudd, W. J. Elliott, and H. C. George, and Cap-. tain Medland, of the Salvation Army, I will take part. A combined religious service will he held in the Olahul u Public Hall at eight, o'clock in the evening, 'Ihe unveiling of 1 a Roll of Honour, containing the names of soldiers of the Onehunga distr'ct, who I have fallen in the war, will take place in . the Carnegie Library, Onehunga, at 3 1 p.m., the ceremony to be performed by I Si; Frederick Lang, M.P. A united commemorative service will be held in tho Onehunga Methodist Church this evening. ; The members of the Onehunga. Borough I Council will attend. DESIRE FOB FULL HOLIDAY,". RETURNED SOLDIERS' VIEWS. Strong exception was taken at the annual meeting of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association last evening to the decision of a number of Auckland business firms to keep their premises open to-day, ! the fourth anniversary of the Gallipoli I landing, or to close only for an hour or two. I A motion that the meeting should de- | mand that the Government declare Anzac ■ Day a close holiday was submitted to tho 'meeting amid applauss. "It is an offence against decent feelings," said one speaker. " They refuse to honour our dead." He pointed out that the citizens had been invited by the Mayor, at the I request of the Acting-Prime Minister, to 1 close their premises for the day. The ani nouncement that ono firm had decided to keep its premises open for tho whole day was received with shouts of " shame. " A proposal that a list should be com piled of the offending firms and published without comment, found favour and tho motion, with this addition, was carried unanimously.
