WAR MEMORIAL.

Sir,—-As I stood the other day on tho top of Mount Albert and gazed upon the all-round extensive view and then looked down into the depths of the interior excavation, I could not help being struck with the suitability of the place in many ways for the erection of a soldiers' memorial. Why not built a concrete tower in tho centre of the excavation, high enough to rise above the level of the top, strong enough to support a concrete roof, and large enough to contain a spiral stair leading to tho top of the roof, the roof to be a promenade, and the tower could also form the base for a memorial monument of some kind. Tho excavation being roofed could then be made a lovelv winter garden, I have never seen any place that would lend itself so naturally to such a purpose. It is just ideal. With light lot in from the roof, ferns and palms of all sorts could bo grown there to perfection, and with a large electric arc light fixed at the. top of the monument, Che garden would be so well lighted as to be available to visitors at night time. The light would be seen Jjbr miles and miles around. I do not think Mount Eden should be touched for such a purpose. It should be preserved, as it is itself a monument to tho power that made it as it is. Good as tho idea of mating a concrete road the length of the two Islands is, yet I do not like it for the purpose of a soldiers' memorial. The idea of a memorial to be trodden* underfoot does not appeal to me. The memorial ought to be something that the soldiers living could have some reasonable hope of seeing accomplished during their lifetime, for I presume it is to be a memorial of the services rendered of the living as well as of those who have fallen.
