Ewington, on account of fail, ing health, has retired_ from the position of honorary official visitor to the Mental Hospital. Mr. Ewington was appointed 33 years ago. His fellow-visitor is Mr. J. W. Stewart. Captain Warwick Smeeton, M.C., Royal Field Artillery, returned to New Zealand by the Willochra last week. • Cantain Smeeton, who is the son of Mr. H. M. Smeeton, of Auckland, enlisted in Eng. land with King Edward's Horse, as a trooper, on August 9, 1914. He received a commission in the Royal Field Artillery in December, 1914, and went to Franca with tho 37th division, in July, 1915. Ha was promoted to lieutenant in January, 1916, and received his captaincy in th» following September, attaining his acting, majority in September, 1918. Captain Smeeton was wounded at Henin, in May, 1917, after having participated in tha battles of the Sorame, the Ancre, and Arras. He also took part in the third battle of Ypres and in the remainder of the last campaign, He gained the M'llitary Cross at Trescourt, and is entitled to the 1914 Star.
