PRETTY MAGAZINE COVERS.

, A magazine with a torn and soiled cover is by no means an ornament, but the same book with a prettily made holland or linen cover may be a thing of beauty. This cover can bo taken off and washed time after time.

To make it, get sdme unbleached linen, or brown holland as it used to be called; that material of which children's strong pinafores were made. Measure the size of the magazine you wish to cover, and allow about three inches over on each of the four sides. On the piece which is to bo on the upper part of the book, the word magazine," or a pretty floral design, may bo worked in suitable 'colour; the title of tho book only may be worked, and if so, this should lie in the centre. Sometimes the initials of the owner are worked as well, in which case the title ol the book should be at the top and the initials in the centre.

First of all, cover the book with a piece of paper of the exact size of the piece of holland. Be careful to cover the book in the way books are usually covered, and mark the folds clearly. Place this paper on the holland, and mark the folds on the latter, at corners and back. Cut off the pieces turned in at the top and bottom of the book, and button-hole stitch over the cut part, to prevent fraying. Mitre the four corners by cutting out the pieces turned in, leaving enough turnings to sew firmly on the wrong side; button-hole stitch the raw edges all round, press with a warm iron all the folds and corners, and sew a piece of narrow elastic to the top and bottom of the inside of the book, through which half the book is passed to keep the cover in place. Library books may be covered in this way, as very frequently they show too clearly that they have passed through careless hands. In this case, the word " Library" embroidered on the uppermost cover 'is all that is necessary, one cover being sufficient for every book in turn.
