THE MAORI BATTALION.
WELCOME AT AUCKLAND.
LARGE GATHERING EXPECTED.
Arrangements for the welcome homo of Joe Maori Battalion, due by the Westmoreland on Saturday, arc reaching completion. Already many Maoris have arrived in Auckland, and there is no douH that for the welcome, one of the largest gatherings of natives seen for years, will assemble. The following telegram was received by the Mayor yesterday from Mr. 11. Tai Mitchell, of Rotorua: "Please convey to the citizens of Auckland our deep appreciation of their cordial invitation, which, under the circumstances, we cannot ignore, despite the fact that in accepting some of our old customs suffer. I will, in conjunction with Wikjriwhi, of Wbaka, take the necessary preliminaries in hand, and select 75 Ar.iwas." ■
