PICTURES ON GOOD FRIDAY.
.«,—: DEVONPORT REQUEST REFUSED. An application for permission to ho!rl a picture entertainment on the evening of Good Friday led to some discussion by the Devonport Borough Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. J. Henderson, moved that permission be granted provided the programme is approved by the town clerk. Mr. F. A. Thompson said that last year the council unanimously decided not to allow a similar entertainment, and the same action was taken in the city. He saw no reason why the council should go back on the precedent, and he moved that the application be refused. Mr. J. Woodall said he considered that a picture entertainment on Good Friday was not a right thing. Mr. Fletcher: What difference does it make ? If we close the theatre here the people will go across to the city. I think we should be tolerant enough to let all people do as they choose on this day, The application was refused by five votes to four.
