MAORI LAND AND FREEHOLD.

Sir. believe that all the King Country settlors should h&va Ilia, right to the' freehold of tl.eir sections if it is only to compensate them for their early struggles. I have no wish to act unfairly to tho Maoris. Let them by all means bo paid a reasonable price for their land, _ but ■we must not overlook tie fact thai it' is through the patience, perseverance, and industry of the white man the King Country is now in so prosperous a position. The objectionable thing in tho leasing system is that the leaseholder may make extensive improvements on his section at considerable expense and tho Maori can then come forward and put an additional tix in tho shape of higher rent because of these very improvements. This should not be allowed to continue. Alfriston. John Oasseu
