Not so very long ago there was a Mayoral election in a New Zealand city, and the man requested by the City Council to accept the chair was a prominent citizen, public-spirited, and capable, a successful man of business, with a character above reproach, and ready and willing to | devote a great deal of time and energy j to local affairs. A good mayor he made, ! too; but that is another story. A month before the election a city coun- ! cillor met a prominent " dry citizen, and aeked him to sign the requisition then being got up in favour of the abovedescribed Mayoral nomine;. ''Not I," said the " dry " man. "He won't get my vote." "Why not?" asked the city co'unci'lcr. " Is not he capable and honest, and likely to do good work for the city?' 1 "That may be so. said the "dry" man, "but he is in wi:h the Trade, and he draws some of his income from breweries and hotels, and if he were an angel from Heaven, and would not vote for Prohibition, I would not vote for him." There you have it again, fellow-citizens. In the eyes of these wild " dry " men only one thine counts. A man may be "wise as a serpent and as harmless as a dove,' but if he will not agree to help these bigots and fanatics to compel and coerce you into ordering your life so as to suit their narrow and tyrannical creed, they will give him no chance ill this world or any other—" not even if he were an angel from Heaven."—(Advt.)
