CRICKET.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Elliot and Dacre continued North Shore's innings against University last Saturday. Midlane being absent. In the second over | Garrard caught and bowled Dacre. The rest ; of the batsmen could do nothing with the bowling, and added very little to the score. Elliot added 30 runs to his previous Saturday's score, but was not playing at all confidently. In his first two overs off Gallagher | he scored fairly freely, but with Cox and '' Garrard he could do nothing. He showed a 1 good defence, and played very cautiously j until he made a very weak stroke at one of , Garrard's leg breaks, and was clean bowled. The 'Varsity team gave a much better show- I ing than on the previous Saturday. The bowling and fielding were excellent. Cox and Garrard were in good form, each getting excellent averages. 'Varsity commenced their first innings badly, two wickets going down for nine runs, i but Nicholson and W. Garrard got together | and soon put on the runs. W. Garrard ' played good cricket for his 59 He has a very, neat leg glide, which he used to much advantage. He showod an excellent defence, but got in some forceful off-drives. All through the season he has been very I slow between the wickets, and on Saturday he was ran out, which a little more energy would have prevented. Nicholson did not sccre as fist as usual, and played cautiously. The fast bowling he played confidently, but Dobb's slow stuff ! seemed to puzzle him occasionally. He got I in some good lute cuts off Coates, and was livening up .ousiderably when Dacre dis- ■ missed him with a brilliant catch. Jones got his 30 by powerful cricket. His ' leg hitting was well-timed and well executed, ' and he got in some forceful off-drives. Like i Garrard he is inclined to be slow between | the wickets, and narrowly escaped a run I Cox was lucky in compiling 64. Ha did i not play the bowling very confidently at first, ! but later livened up. His strokes were rather uppish, but he has a very clean and powor- | ful straight drive. He wts still going wall when stumps were drawn. I The Shore bowling was good and their ! fielding excellent. Dacre did some brilliant ' work in the field, and altosrther tho whole team were very keen. I Ponsonby gained a good victory over Graf- ! ton on Saturday. Smith and Righton made | 129 runs between them. For Grafton, Hopkin--1 son was the most successful bowler, taking seven wickets for 94 nins. Smith, batting for Ponsonby, was seen at bis best against 1 Sneddon, who bowled trickily. Ponsonby is at the head of the championship l)st, and if the Cricket Assxiation does not, at its meeting to evening-, decide to play an additional found has gained the laurel .for the season after a creditable series of victories. "Eden and Parnell played a good game. The position of tho teams is-
