A PROHIBITION CATHECHISM PROHIBITION AND TAXATION. A statement showing the gains to tho State Revenue appeared in Saturday's issue of this papor, and it was then stated that a proof of that statement would appear in To-day's issue. The following Questions and Answers show how Saturday's statement was arrived at. Q.-WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF ALL REVENUE? Answor—Production. Q.-WHAT IS NEW ZEALAND'S ANNUAL PRODUCTION? Answer— Approximately i 100.000,000. Q.-WHAT IS THE ANNUAL NET STATE REVENUE OF NEW ZEALAND? Answer—Last year £15,600,000. Q.-WHERE DID THIS COME FROM? Answer—From tho £100,000,000 of production; 15.6 per cent., or £15 12s in every £100, wont to tho State. Q.-WILL PROHIBITION RESULT IN INCREASED WORKING EFFICIENCY? | Answer— American estimates based upon actual experience place the increased efficiency at 21 per cent., but call it 10 per cent., or even as low as 6 per cent.; this means £5,000,000 to £10,000.000 extra production. Q.-WHAT REVENUE WILL THE STATE LOSE THROUGH PROHIBITION? Answer—About £1,000,000 a year, which is at present derived from the expenditure of £5,000,000 on liquor. Q.-WILL PROHIBITION MEAN ANY ADDITIONAL EXPENSE -TO THE STATE? Answer—Yes. Interest and Sinking Fund will have to be provided upon the compensation paid to the trade. This will not exceed £250,000 a year. Q.-WILL PROHIBITION BRING ANY INCREASES TO THE STATE REVENUE? Answer—Yea. The £5,000,000 now spent on liquor must be disposed of in other ways, and so must yield the same average return to the.State as the rest of production does, vis . 16.6 per cent. This on £5,000,000 is £780,000. Q.-WILL THERE BE ANY OTHER INCREASE TO THE STATE REVENUE AS THE RESULT OF PROHIBITION? Answer— The increased production will yield the same return of 15.6 per cent, to the State. On £5.000.000 this is £780,000; on £100,000.000 if would be £1,560,000. and on the American estimates a much higher sum. Q.-WTLL PROHIBITION CAUSE ANY REDUCTION IN STATE EXPENDITURE? Answer— Present expenditure, on Police. Gaols, Law Courts. Hospitals, Charitable Aid, Old Age Pensions, etc., is £1,474.000. Experts estimate that at least 55 per cent., or £810,000, is caused by drink. This will be saved under Prohibition. . A Final Summary will appear in this space in to-morrow's issue.
