THEFT OF CATTLE.
FINE OF FIFTY POUNDS. WARNING TO THE ACCUSED. [BT TELBBRAPH.— CORMSPOKDENT.] HAMILTON, Saturday. Pound guilty of the theft of cattle at Kaimai, Patrick Lowery (Mr. Hampson), was brought up for sentence in the Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Cooper. Counsel produced testimonials as to accused's previous good character, and reminded His Honor that the jury had made a strong recommendation for mercy. The Judge said it was an extraordinary case, but he had to consider that cattle stealing was not a probationary offence. However, he would take into consideration accused's previous good character, and the fact that he had given every assistance in recovering the cattle. Probably he had got into this trouble partly through ignorance and a certain amount of carelessness. Accused was fined £50, and he was warned that if he appropriated any more cattle he would receive a heavy sentence.
