ATTEMPTED ESCAPE.
INTERNED GERMAN'S DASH.
RECAPTURE ON FERRY BOAT.
DISREGARD FOR PAROLE.
An interned German, Franz Volkner, escaped from Narrow Neck internment camp late yesterday afternoon, and reached Devonport, where he embarked on tho 6.40 p.m. boat for Auckland.
His absence was noted at roll-call after tea, and the Auckland civil and military police wero immediately notified. A cordon of police was on the ferry wharf on tho arrival of tho ferry steamer, and arrested Volkner, who surrendered without resistance. Ho was not taken back to camp, but was placed in custody in Auckland by the military police. Volkner, who had lived in New Zealand prior to tho outbreak of the war, had, with the rest of tho interned prisoners, given his parolo immediately after tho signing of the armistice with Germany. It is stated that he has displayed Bolshevik tendencies of late, and has frequently been involved in quarrels with other prisoners in camp. About a year ago ho engaged in a fight with another prisoner, resulting in his jaw being fractured.
