The Influenza Epidemic. PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT, NEW ZEALAND. INFLUENZA. PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS. If persons undertake the following pre- ' cautions there should be very much loss risk of taking the' illness and likelihood of complications:— PRECAUTIONS. Remain in the fresh air aa much as possible. ~, _ Avoid too close contact with persona suffering from colds. Absolutely avoid intimate contact—e.g., laying and dancing. Avoid places where persons congregate indoors—e.g., publio meetings, trams, entertainments, etc. Avoid draughts. • . Always cough or sneezo into • handkerchief. , Use a simple spray (or the nose and curils the throat— e.i(., Condy's fluid or any other throat antiseptic, or use Formamint lozenges, etc. . Avoid close contact with persons suffering from influenza. Do not remain unnecessarily long with patient, as this increases danger of infant ion. Aminoniatod tincture of ouinino in » drug that is much recommended. Spray or wipe floor and furniture in rooms that have been occupied by infected persons with a solution of about half a breakfast cup to a gallon fo water of any reliable disinfectant. PATIENTS.

Go to bed when feel onset of symptoms, and remain there till all the fever has completely disappeared. This is the only way of avoiding risk of complications. Isolation should be practised where possible, and only one member of family should visit the patient's room. Destroy sputum, etc,, by receiving sputum and nasal secretions into proper reoeptacles containing 6 par cent, carbolio acid, or into olotbs which afterwards burn. Keep patient's feeding utensils, «to., separate, and place in boiling water after use. Handkerchiefs used by patients should be kept separate and well boiled after uso. Patients should not appear in publio places for seven to ten days from the onset of the disease, and should bo particularly careful not to sneer.e or cough without using a handkerchief which has been soaked for an hour m a weak solution of disinfectant—say, a teaspoonful to a pint of water, otherwise there is danger of infection boing spreadLight nutritious diet is recommended. Tho attendant on the sick person siould wash her hands in water to which disinfectant has been added after leaving sick room and before each meaL She and othor members of the household should gargle the throat frequently and douche the nose with mild antiseptics. 6ho should avoid visiting or coming into oloso oontack with other people. On going to bed, taxe drink of any kind i as hot as possible, remove sheets, and lie between blankets <• Take light diet, such at milk, beet tea, I soups. gruel. 5. Don't depress yourself by looking at ths bad side. 6. Remember the large majority of persona who take ill get well j 7. Only one member of the family or bouse should visit patient's room. 8. Don't allow people to come Into your room and loiter about there. 8. If no doctor has prescribed for you take ammoniated quinine in half to teaspoonful dose in plenty water every four hours. 10. Add one teaspoonful of borio. acid or borax, one teaapoonful of baking soda, and one teaspoonful of salt to a large tumblerful of hot water. Sniff up this solution as hot as can be easily borne through the noses then gargle your throat with solution as hot as can be borne. Brush your teeth with the sam« solution or with any antiaeptio toothpast*. Do all these three time# a d»y. 11. if you ineete or cough try to put your handkerchief before your nose or mouth. Remember the minute droplets passing from you in meeting or coughing cany the germs of infectioi to others. 13. Keep in bed till you yourself feel you are Quite ablo to get about.
