PEACE PROPOSALS AND NEW SUBMARINE ATROCITIES.
GOVERNMENT HELD DISQUALIFIED FOE NEGOTIATION. Australian and N.Z. (Received 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 11.
The sinking of the steamers Leinster and Hirano Maru are apparently incidents in the new submarine campaign which was recently inaugurated with the despatch of much larger and more heavily armed submarines to the routes traversed by American transports. The stories of survivors emphasise that the attacks were nothing short of murder. The attack on the Leinster was most determined. The vessel narrowly escaped being torpedoed on Monday. Finally the Germans used three torpedoes, though the vessel was only a fragile cross Channel packet. The newspapers are of the opinion that this is the most shocking sea crime since the sinking of the Lusitania, and that this latest infamy disqualifies Prince* Maximilian's Government from conducting further negotiations - v ■A_i-._i .... .....
