COACHBUILDER'S APPEAL
ONE OF THREE PARTNERS.
An appeal for the exemption of Lewis Joll, master coachbuilder, Mount • Eden, was made to the First Auckland Military Service Board yesterday by the coachbuilding firm of Gilmour, Joll, and Williams. A personal appeal was also lodged. • H. C. Williams, a member of the firm, said be did the painting and signwriting work. ' Gilmour was the wheelwright ana body-maker, while the reservist, the remaining partner, managed the firm's business. If reservist went into camp they would be compelled to give up the motorvehicle trade, of which reservist had made a special study. Although Gilmour and witness were experts in their own respective lines, neither of them could take over the management. Farming and commercial work formed -at least 80 per cent, of the firm's business. • Before the war they employed four blacksmiths, but now had only one, and if he was away reservist had to take his place. Many orders were overdue. W. J. Cousins, managing director of Cousins and Cousins, Ltd., and Daniel Flynn, gave evidence in support of the appeal. Mr. Patterson, who appeared for the appellants, -said tlje Efficiency Board classed the manufacture iof farm vehicles as essential. Major Conlan said there was no .precedent for regarding a.manager as essential. It seemed an anomaly, but it was often the case that a manager was not as essential as a man occupying a lower position. _ a The chairman said there were three partners, and surely arrangements could bo made for the release of one. The board would grant leave till March 6, when | appellants would be expected to have made other arrangements for . the management of the business. ' ~ 7~ _ _ .
