PITT STREET FATALITY.
WAGGON DRIVER EXONERATED.
The death of Mr. Owen Michael Parry a single labourer, who was killed by a waggon in Pitt Street on Monday evening, was inquired into by Mr.- E. D. Mosley, S.M., yesterday.
Evidence was given to the affect that deceased, who was about 56 'ears of age, had been living at 64, Vincent, Street, for the last six weeks. A slight defect in his feet caused him to walk unsteadily. He \yaa a very temperate man. Dr. A. McG. Grant, assistant medical superintendent at the hospital, said deceased was dead when brought to the hospital. Death was due to shock following a fractured skull, shoulder, and leg. Mabel E. Stych said she saw deceased lying on the footpath in Pitt Street. He was, pioked up and crossed the street, walking towards Grey Street. fie fell off the footpath between the front and back wheels of the waggon. The driver of the waggon could not have prevented the accident, and pulled up immediately. Deceased was not walking steadily when he crossed the street. '
. Hubert ,N. Burt, a driver employed by the New Zealand Express Company, said he saw deceased on the footpath apjiroaching the two-horse waggon driven by witness. Witness heard a man call out soon after, and' felt the waggon shake. He got down from the waggon and caw deceased lying on the road. Witness was travelling at a walking pace, and»had a load of two tons. The coroner found that deceased met his death through falling under a waggpn, 110 blame being attachable to the driver of the waggon.
