( Sir Douglas Haig reports: The British and Americans attacked .; at 5.50 this morning north-west of St. Quentin. A battle is proceed- ( ing fiercely on the whole front from St. Quentin north to the Scarpe. Heavy fighting occurred yesterday about Gonneliu and Welsh Ridge, eight miles south-east of Cambrai. We made progress on the high ground south-west of Gonneliu, but were pressed back slightly at Welsh Ridge. We again attacked this morning and made progress at Marccing. We enlarged our bridgehead position east of the Scheldt Canal and drove off a hostile counter-attack. Farther north English naval units established themselves east of the River Scheldt, opposite Camtaing, three miles south-west of .Cam, brai. North of the Bapaume-Cambrai road the Canadians took possession of the defence system known as the Marcoing-Masnieres line as far north as Sailly. The English completed the capture of the Aabencheul aa Bac and Paxleul, on the Sensee Canal, and are fighting in Arlenx. We crossed the Tinquis River in the neighbourhood of Sailly en Ostrevent. The British have taken 16,000 prisoners since Friday morning.
