A rapid and successful development of the allied offensive on the western front is described In to-day's news. The attack between the Scarpe and St. Quenftn has been pressed by British, American, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand troops. The battle, which was fall of dramatic surprises, early developed into a significant victory, one strong point aitm another falling to the Allies. The enemy front between Cwbrai and St, Qnentin has been deeply penetrated, and Canadian troops have advanced to a point due north of Cambrai A rapid advance Has been made by the Belgians and the British Second Army in Flanders, far beyond the farthest line reached last year. The Belgians have entered Staden, 10 miles nortli'Sast of Ypres, hold the whole of Houthnlst Forest, and the entire Passchendaele-Westrcosebeke Ridge. The British Second Army has reached Becelaere and Zandvoorde, beyond the high ground. Nine thousand prisoners have been taken in these operations. The Germans have been forced to make a substantial retirement north of the Aisne. Three envoys from the Bulgarian Government have arrived in Salonika, and have been received by the'allied commander, in-chief. Bulgaria's decision has created widespread alarm In German and Austrian official circles. Since Jury 18 the allied operations on the west front have yielded 269,090 prisoners, 3000 guns, 20,000 machine-guns and huge quantities oi material. It is reported that the past three days' fighting has resulted in the capture of 40,000 prisoners.
