AIRMEN TAKE PROMINENT PART IN THE BATTLE.
MANY ENEMY POSITIONS EFFECTIVELY BOMBED. Anitralian and N.Z. and Renter. (Heed. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 28. Sir Douglas Haig reports: Our aeroplanes dropped 20 tons of bombs on enemy dumps, railheads, and billets, ignited hangars, and destroyed a machine on the ground. We brought down seven machines which were attempting to repel our attack and four others elsewhere. Five British machines are missing. ' The Air Ministry reports: In conjunction with the Franco-American operations yesterday we attacked railways at Metz-Sablons and Andun-le-Roman, with good results. In bitter air fighting we brought down three enemy machines. Six British machines are missing. Our night fliers bombed railways at Metz-Sablons, Mezieres, and Thionv ;:; ; and the Frescaty Aerodrome. Many direct hits were made. A French communique states: Fine weather enabled our aviators to co-operate to the fullest extent throughout the battle. Many tons of explosives were dropped in the rear of the battlefield during the daytime on cantonments, bivouacs, aerodromes, and stations. At nijht-time our fighting planes practically nullified enemy observation. We brought down 42 enemy machines and set fire to seven balloons.
