TWO CANDIDATES NOMINATED.

NEW PLYMOUTH. Friday The writ for the Taranaki by-election was received to-day. Nominations close on Monday and the poll is fixed for October 10. The only candidates now in the field are Mr. J, B. Connett, chairman of the County Council, who is th National Government's candidate, and Mr. Sydney Smith, son of the late Mr. E. M. Smith, a former member for Taranaki, who stands a* a Democrat and is backed bv the local Labour organisations. Mr. Fitzherbert who announced his candidature on behalf of the Labour Party, has retired and has become chairman of Mr. Smith's committee.
