QUARRYING AT MT. EDEN.

CARTAGE DAMAGES ROADS.

An offer of 150 yds of metal per annum was received from the City Council by the Mount Eden B6rough Council at its meeting last evening, as compensation for damage done.to the borough roads by the cartage of iiretal from the City Council's quarry. The Mayor, Mr. C. Hudson, said this was wholly inadequate, as 280 yds of metal was required to repair Normanby Road alone after the- City Council's carta had used it, while damage was also being dona to part of Mount Eden Road. ' The City Council was now endeavouring to secure a long lease of the quarry, ana ha thought the Mount Eden Borough should oppose this. He also mentioned that the quarrying operations were getting dangerously close to the line of Clifton Road. This road would in time carry heavy traffic, and if the encroachment were not stopped the formation of the roadway would bo rendered impossible. j Tho council authorised the Mayor to take legal advice as to what steps should be taken to secure adequate compensation for the damage already done, and, if necessary, to oppose the granting of a long lease of the quarry to the City Council. The engineer was also instructed to report as to whether the quarrying operations had encroached on the line of Clifton Road.
