TRIBUTE TO MB. M. RUDD. Appreciation' of the courtesy and as«rstance extended to the merchants and business community of Auckland by Mr. M. Rudd, chief clerk in the Union Steam Ship Company's local office for the last seven years was expressed at a representative gathering of business men at the Chamber of Commerce on Saturday morning. Mr. Rudd is about to leave for Dnnedin, to take up the position of actingsecretary in the company's head offir.s. Mr. R. Burns, president of the Chamber of Commerce, '<rho presided, said that merchants were sorry to part with such a friend as Mr. Rudd, who had been so intimately connected with them in business, and they felt, he should not be allowed to depart without some tangible expression of their appreciation. They §|ked his acceptance of a silver tea and coffee service on behalf c: Mrs. Rudd, and a cheque for himself. Mr. W. Beddoe, Canadian Trade Commissioner. Mr. H. D. Heather, chairman of the Harbour Board, and Mr. S. A. Longuet also spoke. Mr. Rudd thanked the donors for their handsome gifts and expressions of appreciation. He said he appreciated the difficulty under which shippers had laboured since the outbreak of war, and as far as possible he had endeavoured to look at things from their point of view, and to help them whenever he could. He regretted leaving Auckland, which he considered had a great commercial future before it. The function closed with three heartv cheers frr Mr. Rudd. Mr. Rudd left for Dunedin last i^ighfe.
