FRENCH GALLANTLY CARRY DOMINATING HEIGHTS.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON. Sept. 6. The correspondent of the Morning Post at French headquarters writes: General Humbert's army is steadily advancing, and has captured the Autrecourt heights, east of Noyon. They are of great strength. Every position of vantage bristled with machine-guns, but to the north lay the Canal du Nord, and here General Humbert concentrated his artillery and the infantry delivered a frontal attack against the canal, which the Germans gallantly resisted. There was fighting of a hand-to-hand character throughout Tuesday. Finally on Wednesday morning the infantry crossed the canal and entered Guisoard,' and the heights of Autrecourt were rendered untenable, being captured on Thursday.
