SURPRISING SPEED OF BRITISH ADVANCE IN FLANDERS
HILL THREATENING MESSINES RAPIDLY CARRIED. ________ a ENEMY GIVES GROUND MORE QUICKLY THAN INTENDED. Australian and N.Z. (Received 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 7. Mr. Philip Gibbs writes: Our patrols are creeping forward with surprising speed on the front at La Bassee. The enemy is going back faster than he meant to do. It is certain he intended to hold Hill 63, which threatens Messines, but the defence crumbled so quickly that we won the hill and made progress far down the further side. We are nearly approaching the positions held until the battle of Messines.
