ADVANCE OF TEN MILES WITH CAVALRY AHEAD.
COMMUNICATIONS VITAL TO ENEMY THREATENED.
NO ELABORATION OF DEFENCES ENCOUNTERED.
Australian and N.Z. (Received 55 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 8. The position of the British and Dominion troops north of the Bommo this afternoon was vague, as poor visibility impeded communi-
cation, but they were progressing. It is reported that the British south of the Somme have entered Rosieres, 11 miles east of the Avre. Though the report is not confirmed, it is believed to be correct. The total infantry advance is 10 miles, but the cavalry are some miles ahead. Details regarding them are lacking. The importance of Chaulnes cannot be exaggerated, as it is vital to the enemy on the
whole of the sector. The capture of Lihons means that the enemy will be unable to maintain communications in the Montdidier and Roye ' sectors. We are now able to use Amiens as a railway junction. Airmen are taking a brilliant part in the battle, bombing the fugitives, destroying communications. The German positions bo far overrun are mainly trenches, protected with wire. No pillboxes have been encountered. Von Boehm commands the enemy.
