BRITISH SUCCESS HAILED AS A GREAT VICTORY.
GERMAN SECOND ARMY SHATTERED AND ROUTED.
CORPS STAFF PURSUED ACROSS COUNTRY IN OPEN FLIGHT.
Australian and N.Z. (Received 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 9. Mr. Pfi.-cival Phillips says: It is a great victory. The Second German Array has suffered a humiliating reverse. Much of its organisation, covering the open country before Amiens, has been practically destroyed. Ido not think the war has yielded such stories of rout and confusion of trained soldiers. The outstanding feature has been the complete success of the tanks, cavalry, and armoured cars in delivering the first shook. The tanks and horsemen did amazing things. «jffhe tanks charged huts, in which the headquarters of the Eleventh 9 German Army Corps was stationed at Framerville, seven miles east of filers Bretonneux, and pursued the corps staff down the roads and across the fields. The fugitives left a trail of debris and bootdropped pell-mell in the wild desire to reach the Sommo. The correspondent traversed eight miles of reclaim" Every yard revealed fresh proof of the enemy's constorr ability to check the panic of his troops.
