MUNICIPAL ORGAN RECITAL.
A programme of classical music was presented by the city organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett, at the municipal organ recital on Saturday evening. "Grand Choeur," written by Aloys Clauaraann, was played as an overture, and the opening chords were most effective. Five-four time, with its quaint rythm, was noticeable in DrifSll's "Andantino," a pretty piece. Morandi'a " Bell Rondo " was, undoubtedly, popular. It is laid out in the form of a concerto with solo and tutti entrances, the solo part being intended to be played on small bells. The bell effects are fairly well imitated by a certain disposition of the mutation stops. Guilmant's " Symphony in D Minor" was the masterpiece of the recital, prefaced by a short largo e maestoso movement, an allegro portion follows. Later on, and by way of contrast, a second subject, modulating through various keys and displaying softer combination, is introduced. The second movement, pastorale, is quaint and reposeful, a happy effect, common in the • compositions of French j organists, belnjr produced by the interpolation of the distant strains of a chorale. The third and final movement, allegro assai, is most vigorous, based on two contrasted subjects. Other excellent pieces were a folksong, "Sir John Barleycorn," for organ and carillons, and Sullivan's "March, Henry VHI." Miss Laura Stono sang Gould's Curfew " and Brake's "Down Here." Mies Thelraa Gallaher was the accompanist. ,
