AMERICANS GROSS THE VESLE WEST OF FISMES.
BAYONET FIGHTING FOR VANTAGE OF HIGH GROUND. . Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. WASHINGTON, Aug 8.
Additional American forces have crossed the Vesle west of Fismes. The Americans are meeting counter-attacks with, success. The Germans are attempting by means of barrages to prevent further crossings. Bayonet fighting occurred in 'several * places, the Americans endeavouring to drive the enemy from the high ground near Bazoches, 2j miles west of Fismes, on the Rheiras-Soissoris railway. The correspondent of the Daily Chronicle on the French front states that General Mangin, in an order of the day thanking the Americans for their splendid achievements, says: "You have proved yourselves worthy sons of a great country; 91 cannon, 7200 prisoners, immense booty, and over six miles of reconquered territory are your share of the trophies of this victory. YoU have acquired superiority over the barbarians." , ,
