The forces 6s- 1 engaged comprised French, Canadian, Australian, and English pp . divisions. The first objectives were gained at an early hour, a large number of tanks having been employed in breaking v / down the enemy's resistance. During the morning British pf "* .. . cavalry went into action, and motor machine-gun batteries |§ were also employed. i;;} '' The latest report indicates that the Allies have advanced Hi? about eight miles in the centre of the attack east of Villers LyK- ;r >Bretonneux, and considerable progress has been made on the iP&ht res °' the battlefront. Many villages have been captured, and thousands of prisoners and a large number of guns have Mi? fallen into the Allies' hands. The Germans hold the Vesle line in considerable strength, .. and though it is reported that they have withdrawn heavy fflft-'i guns and some forces over the Aisne no preparations for a general retirement are apparent. ■, The allied forces which landed at Archangel on August 2 b||i ( are advancing rapidly toward Vologda. The opposing force was driven back from the southern bank of the Dwina by shell-fire. '[ ' . ' •. The Italians in Albania have been forced to retire further, the French left wing falling back in conformity. It is expected that the Italians will hold their present position.
