I City (red and black) kicked off, and ..had the advantage over Newton..(red, and white until after an exchango of kicks' . KuKutai attempted to score from a free kick, just missing the posts.. After ft scrimmage Wynn intercepted: and made a fine run but without material gam. In the first spell the game was patchy, with occasional rushes and individual work. A City rush. headed by Wynn, followed closely by Hogan,. Rukutai,. and Paki, was smothered,. and ; at la.-t on exchange of kicks gave Newton a chance to attack. Paki saved, but the Newton pack . swept : : across to the 25. and., made a strong sortie. Paki ; got the , ball, and . when near the line was - collared . .by Castles. ' .. Half-time came . with no score: .. On resuming, City rallied, and Mitchell started a strong advance that bid fair to baffle. the- Newton backs. Paki made a fine cross run, and passed to Bovnird. who was collared within, a yard of the line.' McSwceney made a plucky attempt at relieving the pressure, but it was of no avail; and a scrummage ensued right ' under the . Newton posts... -After a period of spectacular piny a Newton forward infringed, and Rukutai had a shot at goal, but failed. Francis had a try at goal, nnd succeeded in scoring, with a fine kick. This was the only score of the game. Newton tried hard. but unavailing!?, and the final scores were:—. City .. .. •• -.2 Newton . . . 0 ' Mr. Wynyard was referee. GRAFTON V. MARITIME. . Maritime had the advantage for the first few minutes, until the Grafton forwards worked the ball to the midline, and rushed lit on almost to the lino. McGregor sent, on to Tremaine, who scored the first try for Grafton, If worsen converted. From give and take play about midfield. Grafton maintained the initiative., and Pullen cored, . Ifwerson again converting. Although . Maritime had the advantage of two scrums just inside their own territory, nothing came of. them, through Sutton- holding. After half-time Maritime advanced, and Cross scored a try. which Diifty converted. It was . not long before Liinn punted to Dufty, the latter -scoring, but Sutton- failed to convert. Maritime seemed to hold the upper hand, and another try was scored,' Lunn making, a poor attempt at converting.
