MR. CUTTEN'S PROMOTION.

CONGRATULATIONS FROM BAR, Congratulatory reference to Mr. E. C. Cutten's appointment as senior magistrate wag made at the sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. On behalf of the Bar, Mr. Gregory said that members appreciated the way in which Mr. Cutten had conducted the work in the past and the consideration that the profession had received on all occasions. Mr. Moody, on behalf of junior members of the profession, said they were greatly indebted to Mr. Cutteu for the assistance given to them. In reply, Mr. Cutten said a sad feature of his nnnointment was that it was due to Mr. Kettle's enforced retirement. Mr. Kettle had a most kindly nature and was a delightful companion. He was an indefatigable worker and all appreciated his ripe experience. Mr. Cutten said that personally he could not have got through his share of the work of the Court had it not been for the able assistance of Mr. F. V. Frazer. He also referred to the assistance lie had always received from the Bar. He confidently anticipated that fuller provision would be made for carrying on the work of the Auckland Courts, and he hoped the magistrates would be able to provide against the little delays that often occurred. He also hoped that in future it would be possible to give more than ono day a week to civil work. Mr. Cutten was appointed stipendiary magistrate to the Napier district in 1907, and was subsequently transferred to the Hamilton district, which extended to Taumamnui and Taupo to Kawhia. He was transferred to Auckland in 1908.
