ENTRENCHING BATTALION.
♦» ~ METHOD OF FORMATION. GOOD WORK LAST APRIL. [BY telegraph.—press association.} WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Ictorjiatiok concerning tho formation of the New Zealand Entrenching Battalion has been received by the Defence Department in reply to a question cabled to England in June :— All New Zealand reinforcements in France last February, on the absorption of the Fourth Brigade, were organised into three Entrenching Battalions," states the cablegram. "They are now so organised, but when the surplus numbers are absorbed they will form an entrenching group of the strength ; of one battalion. On April 12 the Second Entrenching Battalion, with a strength of 22 officers and 1130 other ranks, was! moved hurriedly by motor 'buses to St. Jans Capel to fill a gap near Meteren, and was attached to the Nineteenth Divi- 1 sion. They rendered excellent service, I and fought well, but some were captured through being cut off. The casualties totalled 251."
