ALIEN ENEMIES QUESTION.

CALL FOR INTERNMENT. . LONDON, Juno 22. The National Party is organising a petition for the immediate internment of all enemy aliens. [ Unusual interest is centred in the ClapI ham by-election. Tho Coalitionist, Mr. , Harry Green, is opposed by Mr. IlamilI ton Beamish, nominee of Mr. Pemberton Billing, M.P. Both candidates uro paying attention to tho enemy alien question. Mr. Beamish recently said that if returned and all enemy aliens were not interned, he would create a pandemonium in the House of Commons. ■ Tho Prime Minister's secretary has j written to Mr. Green, stating that Mr. J Lloyd George is personally examining tho j wholo question of alien enemies, and that : this country is determined to tako whatj ever action is necessary. j The lobbyist of the Times understands | that Mr. Lloyd George is so seriously I concerned at tho recent developments in ' ! the treatment of naturalised and unnatur-1 ! alised aliens that he proposes to person-1 ally investigate the Foreign and Home I Office measures with a view to tightening ! up tho system and to allay public mis- • givings. j The Prime Minister, in a letter to Mr. I Green, says that the only issue at present I is national unity and resolve to stibordi- '■ nate everything to winning tho war. The i Germans are bent on undermining tho i 1 ' morale of the allies by promoting dissen- | sion and distrust behind the lines. Mr, Lloyd George has determined, in ! view of public unrest, to intern all ; enemy aliens if shown that their freedom 1 is a menace. He is dealing first with the , Germans recontly naturalised, dismissing I all Government employees and munition- • I workers of German extraction.
