SUBMARINE BEATEN OFF.
DEFEAT BY BRITISH SHIP. .' THRILtING RUNNING FIGHT.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Red! 1.45 a.n.) LONDON. July 4A thrilling story is told of a fight put up by a British steamer against one of tho latest type of submarines. A torpedo passed under the steamer's stern, and! search revealed a periscope 50 yards, away. Tho 300 passengers calmly took i up their boat stations. Tho submarine ] broke the surface a quarter-hour later, training two light guns on tho steamer, which replied. Six shots fell near the submarine, compelling her to sheer off.l She then manoeuvred to bring two heavyi guns into action. One shell struck the. steamer, causing her to list to port. She; attempted to use a smoke screen, but thin ■ proved ineffective, owing to the wind., The engineers got the most possible out | of the engines during a running fight, which followed. The merchantman's J aerials were shot away. The passengers ; coolly watched the fight and cheered tho sailors and gunners. The submarine abandoned the fight at nightfall.
