■ PROGRESS OH -MILE FRONI AMERICANS DEFEAT ATTACK GERMS SUFFER HEAVY LOSS Successful operations were carried out by Australian forces •car Villers Bretouneux on Thursday morning. Toe objective -the removal of an awkward indentation resulting from the German offensive in March-was attained, and in addition two small woods south of the village were captured and the advance pressed to high ground to the south-east. At the same time an advance was made on the north of the river, between {he Somme and the Ancre, thus completing an improvement in the British line for nearly five miles. The Australians captured 1500 prisoners and consolidated their gains. The Americans repulsed a counterattack at Vaux. General Pershing reports that a German regiment was practically annihilated. Renter's correspondent at British headquarters reports that 11 leading German airmen have been killed or captured recently. The German aerial bombing organisations have also lost heavily.
