FIFTY YEARS AGO.
NEW LOCAL INDUSTRY,
MAKING CARPET BROOMS.
(From the Herald of June 18, 1868.) $. 7 hat has hitherto been known as tha American broom is now being manufactured in Auckland. Of superior quality to the imported article, they can be sold at 18s per dozen. The specimen which has been left at this office is stronger, larger, stouter, and more strongly bound than the imported broom. The broom plant is grown by Mr. May, of Epsom, •■who has done all he could to foster this local manufacture. Mr. Hockin, - who is manufacturing the broom', has machinery for turning the handles, .and can make 20 dozen a day, and as he can make some 12 dozen of these brooms a week, ho can well afford to supply them to the trade at 18s per dozen. There is enough material now on hand to turn out from 3000 to 4000 brooms.
