MISSIONS IN THE ISLANDS. BISHOP PATTESONS MOVEMENTS. (From the IIEBALD of Juno 7, 1868.) Somewhat unexpectedly the missionary schooner Southern Cross, which left Auckland only about three weeks ago, returned to Kohiniariuna. on Saturday afternoon. The Southern Cross had a, fine-weather passage to Norfolk Island, arriving there on the 21st- of May with a cargo of timber and stores for Bishop Patteson. We learn from Captain li'ley that Bishop Patteson has abandoned his intent of proceeding to the islands this season, bt causo of the severe sickness which has prevailed among the settlers of Norfolk Island during the past month, 16 inhabitants having died from typhoid fever. However, when tlio Southern Cross sailed from the island on May 29 the disease had almost subsided, and many who had been great- sufferers were gradually improving In health. Bishop Patteson intends to remain at Norfolk Island until the return to Auckland of Bishop Selwyn.
