THEFT ON A STEAMER.
AUCKLAND WAITRESS ROBBED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Two men. John Dimmack and Robert Donald Murray, were sentenced to three months' imprisonment in the Police Court this morning for the theft of £4 from a saloon passenger by the Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Maori on the night of May 12. Evidence was given that accused were steerage passengers, that they were found in the precincts of the saloon, and were ordered back to the steerage. The missing money was found on the accused. Irene Towers, waitress, employed at the Royal Hotel, Auckland, deposed that she was returning to Auckland from a holiday spent at Christchurch. She was a passenger by the Maori on May 12, and on going on board had three £1 notes in a bag, a half-sovereign, a ten-shilling note, and some silver. During the night she was suddenly awakened, and found her bag .on -a stool near the cabin door, though she thought she had placed it under a pillow. In the morning witness found that the contents of her bag were disarranged, and her money, with the exception of was missing.
