STRIKE IN JOHANNESBURG

MUNICIPAL ENGINEERS. TRANSPORT SERVICE STOPPED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 7.30 n.m.) CAPETOWN, May 13. A Sthikb occurred at Johannesburg owing to the Town Council refusing to concede a demand of the engineers in the municipal employ for a weekly wage of £8 2s. The light and tram services were interrupted, the city being in partial darkness, and a large number 'of people thrown out of employment. Subsequently the strikers consented to keep the light and water supplies normal. Suburban dwellers are compelled to walk to the city as a result of the stoppage of the trams, while the carriage of large quantities of meat in cold storage is affected. (Received 8.30 p.m.) Renter. CAPETOWN, May 13. The Johannesburg Town Council, in committee, agreed to the demands of the strikers- Confirmation by a full council meeting is still required.
