AMERICAN WEIGHT TELLING
ASSISTANCE TO THE ALLIES MEN, FOOD, AND MONEY. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. fßecd. 5.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, Mcy 12. The London correspondent of the United Press interviewed Lord Milner, Secretary of State for War, who said America was rapidly filling the gap in the allied strength due to Russia's failure. The war could only be won decisively by a superiority of man-power and material. America would make that superiority certain. Lord Rhondda, the Minister in Charge of Food Control, said that without the aid of the United States it would have been impossible for the allies to have fed their troops and civilian populations for the last six months.
Mr. Bonar Law, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said : " America has splendidly assisted us financially, giving to the full extent of her ability, and thus enabling Britain to borrow from her much which had been loaned to the other allies."
The New York Times, discussing the American Army in France, says that authentic figures show that the German Army is now approximately 5,300.000 men, exclusive of the Austrian Army. This year Germany was able to add 600,000 men. The allies from Calais to Belfort are facing 3.654,000 Germans. The paper points out that there is a great task before the allies, and that every available American soldier is needed. It estimates the rate of German losses at more than a million annually.
