AUCKLAND ORPHANS' CLUB.
OPENING OF THE SEASON
The members of the Auckland Orphans' Club opened their 1918 season on Saturday evening at the Masonic Hall, Belgium Street, and enjoyed a very successful evening's entertainment. The newly, elected president, Mr. V. J. Lamer, occupied the chair. Amongst visitors were Lieutenant-Colonel T. W. Jolliffe, Mr. H. Buckleton, manager of the Auckland branch of the Bank of New Zealand, Mr. C. F. Thomas, manager of the trust branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Mr. P. H. Upton, general manager of the South British Insurance Company, and members of the Devonport Orphans' Club. Apologies for absence were received from Sir James Allen, Act-ing-Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Sir Robert McC. Anderson, of Australia, Mr. O. Elliot, Mr. C. Rhodes, and Mr. A. Coutts, president of the Auckland Savage Club. Greetings were received from Orphans' Clubs in other centres. Forty-one new members were elected. An excellent musical programme was submitted, the selections by the club orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr. O. F. Cater, being a special feature. Songs were sung bv Messrs. R. Bellow, A. H. Ripley, F. J. Teat. F. G. Bourke. J. Pringle, and H. Piper. Mr. Cater played two cornet solos, and Mr. A. McElwain entertained those present with two humorous items. The accompaniments were played by Messrs. G. Sharland and H. Piper.
