WAR PENSION REGULATIONS

SUPPLEMENTARY PROVISIONS. Additional regulations dealing with war pensions are published in last week's Gazette. They deal with the payment of supplementary pensions under the Pensions Act of 1917, and the conditions under which medical treatment is to be given and accepted. Where a partially disabled member of the forces in receipt of a pension is undergoing medical or curative treatment, and is thereby precluded from following any occupation, he may make application tor an increased pension. Similarly a pensioner, who is undergoing treatment | while in employment, and who is compelled for the purpose of treatment to absent himself from work, may apply for an allowance to cover loss of wages or out-of-pocket expenses. Where a disabled member of the forces in receipt of a pension is, under authority from the Director-General of Medical Services, an inmate of a hos- j pital or other institution, the maximum amount that shall be paid to him by way i of pension either directly or by arrangement with the authorities of the institution shall be 10s a week, and any balance shall be retained and paid to him on hH discharge from the institution, or paid, at the discretion of the War Pensions Board, to the wife or such other dependant as may be determined. Where a disabled member of the forces who has applied for and been granted a pension is, on the advice of a medical board, recommended to undergo or continue medical or curative treatment, and such advice is not accepted, and the Director-General of Medical Services certifies that such treatment in available without expense to the member, and that the refusal to accept the same' is unreasonable the Commissioner q| Pensions will call upon the pensioner to show cause why the treatment offered should not be accepted. In the event of the refusal being persisted in the War Pensions Board shall determine what portion, if any, of the pension payable in respect to the disablement shall be withheld.
