OBITUARY.

MR. H. H. ' METCALFE, M.LOJS. Mb. Henry Hnlbert Metcalfe, M.1.C.E., the -9 well-known civil engineer, of Auckland, :fi| died suddenly at Whakatane ,on Friday s afternoon, while inspecting the local har- ! vl : l bour works. He left Auckland for Whakatane on Thursday, and -.-; i then appeared to be in good health., having ?; apparently if covered from a serious.'-ill-ness of twelve months ago. •; ; ; Mr. Metcalfe, who was 67 years of age, "4 ; was a son of Mr. Henry Geldhart .Met-' ] calfe, of Ringwood, Hampshire, England. , He was educated at Cheltenham College, fl England, and at King's College, London. ;| Prior to coming to New Zealand, about ' ■ thirty years ago, he had considerable civil engineering experience in " South' America, Africa, and Australia. He met with 4: • distinctive success in' the practice of-.'his ■•■:-£ I profession in New Zealand, and.he carried , 'out many important works in the North [and South Islands. He was .engineer, ! consulting and otherwise, to many local ' 'and public bodies, and was identified with I many of the large civil engineering works iin the Auckland district, including Hie ,gp drainage systems of Devonport and other, ...■;■ areas in the city and suburbs, and also the Whangarei waterworks. Buddie reside in Auckland, and Mrs. W. J. Broadfoot at Te Kuiti. The interment will S take place at Parewa Cemetery this sit&i noon, at two o'clock.
