TEACHER'S RESIGNATION
SEQUEL TO CONVICTION. NOT ACCEPTED BY BOARD. The Auckland-Education Board was called on yesterday to consider the resignation from the teaching staff of the Technical College of Henry W. Mayo, who was recently fine'i £25 for publishing a statement indicating disloyalty. The resignation was tendered in consequence of the conviction. Mr. 0. W. Murray said that the committee of the Technical College, of which he was a member, had decided to refer tho matter to the board as only half of the committee members were present when it "came before them. The question was whether the board should accept tho resignation or not. At first he had thought that to accept it was the only course, but he had been informed that Mayo had previously acted in a patriotic way, having assisted in tho patriotic work of the college, and also had been instrumental in getting the boy scouts to salute returned soldiers. Mr. George George, director of the college, said that Mayo was an excellent teacher, his subjects being mathematics and French. His actions in the past had not indicated disloyal sentiments. He had subscribed generously, according to his means, to patriotic funds, and, as had been mentioned, had suggested that boy scouts should salute returned soldiers. Mr. F. W. Brinsden, said that the Court had punished the man. He moved that Mayo be retained on the teaching staff. , Mr. Murray said he would second the motion pro forma, 60 that it might be discussed. None of the members, one or two of whom had left the meeting, had anything to say on the matter, and tho chairman thereupon put the motion. There were one or two "ayes" and no "noes," and the chairman leclared the motion carried.
