ADVANCE IN MESSINES SECTOR DEFINITELY HELD.
fjfpO APPRECIABLE PROGRESS MADE IN THE SOUTH. lg||l GRIP ON PLOEGSTEERT WOOD GAINED UNDER FOG. Tints. (Received 10.10 p.m.) LONDON. April 12-1 am. « Mr. H. Perry Robinson, who has just returned from the Messines Sidge area, thinks that the advance has been definitely held. There is fierce fighting on the southern sector. The enemy is progressing ', |e»fc below Estaires. He has crossed the River Lawn and is now ' fighting between Lestrem and Merville. As the line in the vicinity of jfepivenchy is solid we still hold the Estaires line from the river to SteenwT.-k. The enemy's penetration at this point must be on a .very small front and in no strength. The situation is peculiar and . -confused. Yesterday's attack on the northern section was made bv |: three divisions on a five mile front, from Hoegsteert to near Hollebeke. Aided by thick mist the enemy had penetrated Ploegsteert Wood by seven o'clock, and from there the attack spread northwards.
