CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The Council of the Auckland Chaabw of Commerce met yesterday, the president, Mi. Robert Bums, occupying the chair. The, official assignee, Mr, W. S. Fisher, forwarded a copy of a resolution passed recently by creditors in a bankrupt estate, calling the- attention of the Minister for Justice to the. very unsatisfactory itato of the law with regard to landlords, wjo are given a preferential claim i'or six months' rent, and power to restrain for 12 months' rent, and urging the Government to amend the law by placing tho landlord in the same position as any other creditor. The chairman said that the conference of chambers of commerce had made similar suggestions on several occasions. So far no amendment "had been made to the law, although the Government had promised to consider the claims of clumbers of commerce when a change was made. Messrs. H. 0. .Wiles, Ltd., wrote on the question ti the scarcity of tonnage from New York to New Zealand, suggent" ing that an effort should be made to obtain space for New Zealand cargo in some of the sailing ships going to Australia. Tho president said this matter bad already been dealt with, and one or two vessels were to call at New Zealand ports.
