PATRIOTIC EXECUTIVE.

DENOMINATIONAL DONATIONS

POLICY OP THE ASSOCIATION. Tun oxocullvo of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic mid War Relief Awoolulion mot yesterday, Till) Mayor, Mr, J. It, Annson, presided, Tim question of malting a monthly donation of 017 iOa to the Salvation Army'a Institute for soldiers, at Rotorua, was discussed. The donation was assessed by the Advisory Hoard of New Zealand patriotic (societies on a proportional basis. The Rotorua branch ofj Ihe Auckland Association was asked by J the executive to make a report on the homo, and in doing so it recommended that the axocutivo make the donation mentioned for 12 months, at the end of. of which period the matter should be reconsidered. I Mr. C. J. Tunis raised the point as to whether the executive was not creating a precedent in making a donation to a dc- ; nominational institution. Applications' might be made from other bodies like tho Salvation Army, and in fairness to all the executive, would have to accede to the requests. Mr. Tanks said he thought the executive had taken a definite stand in matters of the kind. Mr. V. J. Lamer said that the case of I Rotorua was an isolated one. No other place in the Dominion had such special claims. The Salvation Army's Homo was purely for soldiers, and was not used for, propaganda work. Mr, H. Norton said ho agreed with Mr. Tanks. If, say, the Church. of Ensland made a claim for a donation towards ! its activities among the soldiers at Rotorua, it would have to be forwarded to the Advisory Board, and if that body recommended or fixed a levy then the executive could not resist it. ! The executive decided to pay the monthly levy to the Salvation Army Hune. It was resolved to discontinue sending' the monthly donation of £100 to Colonel W. H. Parkes, director of medical services to the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in England, on account of the Red Cross Society having undertaken tho responsibility of providing extra comforts for sick and wounded soldiers. An acknowledgment of the executive's donation of £250. to be forwarded to the New Zealand War Contingent Association in London for distribution among fit men on furlough, was received from tho secretary of the Advisory Board. The action of the chairman in declining to make 'b grant towards a proposed Bay of Plenty Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Club was approved. The application wasdirected from Rotorua. Mr. A. 0. Limn wrote forwarding a balance-sheet of the Anniversary Regatta, 1918, showing that the Patriotic Association had benefited to the extent of £148 2s 6d. The report of tho. Relief Committee stated that since the last report 258 cases had been dealt with, 31 being new applications. The monetary assistance disfanned amounted to £501 8s Bd. Tho board had received £140 Is 4d in refunds. The Claims Board reported that the number of applicants appearing before it during the month had been 459, which, was almost doublo the number during the previous month, A sum of £2446 19s 4d had been disbursed during the period.
