ATTACK ON AERODROMES
PROGRESS ON EUPHRATES
TURKS WITHDRAW FROM HIT
Sir Douglas Haig reports a particularly successful attack upon three enemy aerodromes by a large number of British aeroplanes, On the return journey the attacking machines used their machine-guns effectively against infantry formatlons- Over a ton of bombs were dropped upon motor works, munition factories, and the railway at Stuttgart, capital of the Duchy of Wurtemburg, on Sunday, with good results. An enemy raid on the British trenches east of Armentieres, was repulsed. Successful raids in the neighbourhood of Cam. brai and St, Quentin are reported by Sir Douglas Haig. The enemy artillery is showing great activity at and south of the Ypres sector. Correspondents at British headquarters describe the break, down of the German attacks on the Ypres salient on Friday as having been complete. The storm troops were badly shaken by the barrage, which at Polderhoek made effective assembly impossible. The British forces in Mesopotamia have occupied Hit, 70 miles beyond Bagdad, without opposition. Semi-official reports from Pekin state that the Cossack leader in Siberia has good prospects of gaining control of the country when guns and supplies arrive. Owing to demoralise tion of the railway system the supplies at Vladivostok are in no immediate danger. The Japanese press is suggesting that a military expedition to Siberia is not at present necessary. Russians in the East admit that the threat of such, action is proving useful as a deterrent, but that the fear of it might throw Russia into the armsv)f Germany. A protest has been made by Russia against the German action in Finland and the Aaland Islands.
