AUCKLAND ORPHANS' CLUB.

SUCCESSFUL "LADIES* NIGHT." ~ One of the most successful. gatherings in ':■•"" the history of the Auckland .Orphans' Club was held at the .Town - Hall: last ■ ■•; evening, when the club 1 extended a complimentary concert to : ;h& " lady friends of v members. r: .iThe hall was "decorated ; - with the flags of the allied nations, : and ; ; the club's banners'occupied a conspicuous '~ place.:' There was a very /large" attend- ; ance. Mr. G. E. Read, who presided, apologised, for the absence of the presi- ': dent, Mr. C. J. Parr,; M.P. ; Mr. Read ~: announced, that the proceeds of . the evening were to be devoted to the " Our Day" Fund. Mr. C. F. Bickford, h'on. finan- ~ y cial organiser to the joint committee, later made an'appeal for .;generous support of the fiisd. A good : , musical and elocu-V-;: tionary : programme was imbmitted.' The v ; club's orchestra, under:- the conductorship . of Mr. A. G. Cater, played ?e v *l en- : lovable selections, among the mof popular of which were " Poet and Peasant," - " Jours. Passez," and " Ceboes' de Bastion." ~ v Songs .. ■were contributed by ' Messrs. E. ; Drake. H. ! Piper. H. Manning, v and F.
